TAKEFUMI HORI

About The Artist

My practice is based around various inspirations and artistic endeavors. I am not trying to create works that tell viewers how to think or feel. I make subtle suggestions, which allow people to engage on a level that is beyond just the visual. Ultimately my paintings are intended to provide a space for the eye to wander and the mind to rest. - Takefumi Hori

Takefumi Hori was born in 1978 in Tokyo, Japan. He studied Japanese calligraphy before moving to New York in 2004. Once in New York, he started experimenting with abstraction, creating paintings using acrylics on canvas

Inspired by the brilliant 18th century gold screen paintings of Japan and 1940’s New York abstract expressionism as well as graffiti, the artist’s works are a fusion of both Eastern and Western influences. Since 2009, he has created works using gold leaf and paint inflected with gold - layering, scratching and scraping his surfaces. He also uses silver and bronze leaf to create visual depth and to reflect light depending on the angle of view.

Through his exploration of materials, Hori has found that compositional elements such as circles, squares, and rectangles are ideal forms for his work which combine both precious metals and painterly elements. His compositions are also often based his experience with Japanese calligraphy: he places the center of visual weight to the lower left and creates movement to the upper right of his canvases; another way he merges Eastern art traditions with Western.

The artist currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
